Kohler Engine Carburetor Identification and Fitment Guide

Kohler engines are used in lawn tractors, zero-turn mowers, generators and other outdoor equipment. Choosing a replacement carburetor requires more than matching the horsepower or the word “Kohler.” Engines in the same family can use different carburetors, choke systems, fuel fittings and linkage arrangements.

Find the engine model and specification numbers

Before removing the original carburetor, locate the engine identification label or stamped information. Record:

  • Engine family or series, such as Courage, Command, Magnum or K-series
  • Complete model number
  • Specification or spec number
  • Serial number
  • Equipment make and model

The specification number is especially important because it identifies the exact engine configuration. Two engines with a similar model designation can use different control and fuel-system parts.

Compare the original carburetor

Use the engine numbers to narrow the options, then physically compare the original carburetor. Check:

  • Mounting-hole spacing and flange orientation
  • Throttle and choke linkage position
  • Manual choke, automatic choke or fuel-solenoid configuration
  • Fuel inlet direction and fitting size
  • Vent and pulse-port locations
  • Bore diameter and gasket shape
  • Electrical connector and voltage for a fuel shutoff solenoid
  • Any casting, manufacturer or reference numbers on the original unit

Photos are helpful, but measurements and engine identification provide stronger confirmation.

Symptoms that can resemble a bad carburetor

  • Hard starting or starting only with choke
  • Surging at a steady throttle
  • Fuel leaking from the bowl
  • Engine stalls when the choke opens
  • Loss of power under load
  • Black smoke or an overly rich mixture

These symptoms do not always mean the carburetor must be replaced. Inspect the fuel filter, fuel line, tank vent, air filter, intake gasket, ignition system and valve condition. Old fuel or debris in the fuel system can quickly affect a new carburetor.

Check the fuel-solenoid system

If the carburetor has an electric fuel shutoff solenoid, confirm that the connector, plunger and voltage match the application. A solenoid that does not receive power can prevent fuel flow and imitate a carburetor blockage. Disconnect the battery and follow the equipment manufacturer’s service procedure before electrical testing.

Replacement checklist

  1. Photograph the linkage, springs, hoses and wiring before disassembly.
  2. Shut off the fuel supply and disconnect the spark-plug lead.
  3. Compare the new and original carburetors side by side.
  4. Install new, correctly oriented gaskets where required.
  5. Reconnect each linkage and spring to its original position.
  6. Check for leaks before starting the engine.
  7. Confirm smooth throttle and choke movement before operating under load.
